Types of EPS
What types of EPS can be recycled?
At BEWI Circular we recycle various types of expanded polystyrene (EPS) to ensure it is reused efficiently in a circular economy. However, not all EPS is suitable for recycling. Below is a breakdown of what can and cannot be recycled.
Recyclable EPS types
White EPS (clean & uncontaminated)
- Used for packaging, insulation, and protective materials
- Commonly found in electronics, appliance, and furniture packaging
- Must be free from dirt, glue, labels, or other contaminants
Examples:
- Protective packaging for TVs, fridges, and electronics
- Fish boxes & food trays (if clean and dry)
- Construction insulation offcuts
Compacted EPS (blocks & briquettes)
- EPS that has been compressed using a baler or compactor
- Reduces storage and transport costs by up to 90%
- Ideal for bulk recycling programs
Examples:
- EPS blocks from industrial packaging
- Densified EPS from compactors
Non-recyclable EPS types
Contaminated EPS
- EPS mixed with dirt, food waste, adhesives, or chemicals
- Cannot be processed without extra cleaning, which is costly and inefficient
Examples:
- EPS used for wet food packaging (e.g., greasy takeaway boxes)
- EPS with glue, cement, or paint attached
Fire-retardant EPS (FR-EPS)
- EPS with added flame retardants (often used in construction)
- Requires separate treatment due to chemical additives
Examples:
Certain construction insulation panels
- Fire-resistant EPS foams
Biodegradable EPS alternatives
- Some newer biodegradable foams resemble EPS but do not follow the same recycling process
- These materials must be disposed of separately
Examples:
Plant-based or compostable EPS alternatives
How to ensure EPS is recyclable?
- Keep it clean
No food, dirt, glue, or contaminants - Compact if possible
Compacted EPS is easier to transport & recycle - Separate from other plastics
Do not mix with other waste streams - Check with BEWI Circular
