The Scandinavian pioneer in plastics recycling technology, BEWI, discussed the possibilities of recycling packaging materials with key players in Slaný. Representatives from five leading users of recycled plastics from the Czech Republic, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland met with a delegation from BEWI Circular, who stands as one of the foremost European pioneers in closed- loop recycling technology.
At the BEWI Circular facility in Slaný, the company showcased its technology for recycling Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) into rGPPS (recycled polystyrene), which can be reused repeatedly, whether as insulation or as packaging solutions. “Implementing a closed-loop concept is no easy task.
While most companies aspire to implement sustainability solutions, executing them can present numerous challenges. At BEWI Circular, we possess the requisite technology and equipment, enabling us to undertake this work for our partners and customers,” remarked Aljosa Krizman, CEO of BEWI Circular, during the event.
Recycling has now become a focal point for senior management across Europe. The revision of Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste as part of the EU Circular Economy Package mandates the recycling of all packaging materials entering the market by January 2030 and requires them to be fully recyclable by January 2035. By 2025, 65% of plastic packaging is expected to be recyclable.
Czech companies are exploring options for recycling packaging materials and taking proactive steps much earlier than necessary, which is encouraging to see
Artem Ocheretin, CEO of BEWI Czechia
At BEWI, we advocate for a closed-loop recycling approach, and we currently collect and recycle more used EPS than any other insulation company in Europe. Cooperation is essential for creating a more sustainable future where resources are conserved, and plastics are reused and recycled.
